When I attempted to move to adjust my Lippert pin box I broke 1/2 socket wrench and 1/2 breaker bar. I painted the sides after so I would be able to see if it did move. Just drove almost 4000 miles and still tight. I tightened them as much as my wrench went. When I installed the Moreryde pin box, The bolts were a touch loose in the holes as mentioned above. Today is just the tomorrow you worried about yesterday! This would be somewhat of an overkill but nevertheless it's the way 50 years of working in the maintenance of machinery and as a general machinist has taught me would be the way to guarantee not having to worry about any movement of the pin-box and if there WERE movement of the pin-box it would not be applying shear action on the weaker surface area of a threaded section of the bolt. They (unthreaded shoulder portion) need to not be of a length long enough so as to prevent the nut from clamping up to the metal with applicable torque. You need to get that portion for it's ability to penetrate both pin-box and frame thickness of metal and thereby reducing shear action. Well this is interesting! The holes in your pin-box and your trailer pin-box frame are 3/4" but someone has put 5/8" bolts in them? My method would be to get 3/4" grade 8 bolts in a length that would allow for a short shoulder which is a portion of the bolt adjacent to the head that is unthreaded. So if the hole is 3/4" then put a 3/4" bolt in it and use a grade 8 bolt and use lock washers.Ģ008 Dodge Ram Quad Cab 4x4 DRW 6.7 cumminsĢ008 Jayco Eagle 341 RLQS 37' with B&W turnover ball & companion hitch This is the wrong answer because you would get at least a 1/4" of movement between the two pieces which would result in a shearing action of the bolt it might not happen right away but it will happen. This is standard oversize hole sizing for bolted connections. Socaldesertrider wrote:1/2" bolt in a 5/8" hole is normal, as is a 5/8" bolt in a 3/4" hole. Is this abnormal (Lippert, BTW.)? I suspect that any amount of torque will still allow it to "settle" due to the gap between bolt and hole.
